Following months of planning, research and discussion, Crewkerne Town Council has set the budget for the 2025/26 financial year. This year’s budget proposal includes a modest 1.8% increase in the precept, translating to an additional £4.46 per year for a Band D property, or just 37p per month. This slight adjustment is designed to support a range of essential projects and services that will benefit our community.
Key Highlights of the 2025/26 Budget
1. Enhancing Community Spaces and Services The budget prioritises necessary works on the Council’s extensive property portfolio and open spaces. This includes upgrading the floodlights at Happy Valley to energy-efficient LEDs, ensuring our parks and recreational areas are well-lit and safe for all.
2. Supporting Local Initiatives An increase in the community grants budget will enable the Council to support a wider range of groups and offer higher value grants; in turn encouraging local initiatives.
3. Youth Services and Events Despite pressures from increasing National Insurance costs, the budget includes provisions for the Youth Service and plans to run a Skate Jam event in 2025. These initiatives aim to engage and support our younger residents, providing them with valuable opportunities and activities.
4. Waste Management With changes to Somerset Council’s waste removal arrangements, the Town Council will now cover the cost of waste collection from our open spaces. This ensures that our community remains clean and well-maintained.
5. Health and Safety Upgrades Various health and safety inspections are due, and the budget includes funds for necessary rectifications. This commitment to safety ensures that all Council properties and facilities meet the required standards.
6. Enhanced Public Amenities The proposal to increase the cleaning frequency of Falkland Square toilets to twice daily reflects the Council’s dedication to maintaining high standards of hygiene and comfort for residents and visitors alike.
7. Traffic and Safety Measures The addition of a new Speed Indicator Device is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and promote awareness of speeding within the town.
Moving Forward
This budget aligns with the Council’s Action Plan for 2023-27, supporting objectives aimed at developing and improving our town. The Council is committed to transparency and careful financial planning, ensuring that every penny is spent wisely for the benefit of the community.
Mayor of Crewkerne, Alice Samuel, commented:
“As we look ahead to the new financial year, this budget will enable Crewkerne Town Council to continue delivering essential services, support local initiatives, and invest in the future of our town. Together, we can build a brighter, more vibrant community for all”.
