Crewkerne Town Council has identified a number of areas around the town’s open spaces which are suitable to leave to grow in order to create a wildflower meadow effect. These are reaching maturity and look fantastic, as well as being great for biodiversity, providing a food source for wildlife and reducing emissions when compared to weekly mowing.
The wildflower areas can be found at the following locations:
- Bincombe Beeches Nature Reserve
- Happy Valley Recreation Ground
- Henhayes Recreation Field
- Barn Street Recreation Ground
- Townsend Cemetery
- St Bart’s Churchyard
Councillor Alice Samuel, Mayor of Crewkerne, added: “Following the initial success of our pilot wildflower areas, the town council has identified additional areas for this summer to bring more wildflowers to Crewkerne. The areas look great at the moment – we even have orchids! This is helping with our biodiversity commitment and providing a source of food for wildlife. Please take a tour of the sites to see the vibrant colours of the wildflowers whilst they are at their best.”
Please help us to look after our wildflower areas – we mow designated pathways through these areas to protect their growth and insect habitats. We would welcome suggestions for additional wildflower areas next year – drop us a line on towncouncil@crewkerne-tc.gov.uk.
